Modes

Main Modes

Mode	Enter	Exit	Purpose
Normal	Default mode (or `Esc`)	—	Navigation and editing commands. This is the default when you launch Helix
Insert	`i` (before), `a` (after), `o` (below), `O` (above), `I` (line start), `A` (line end)	`Esc`	Type text directly into the document

Minor Modes

Minor modes are accessed from Normal mode and typically switch back to Normal mode after one command (except View/Sticky and Space which can persist) 2.

Mode	Key	Purpose
View	`z`	Scroll and reposition the view without moving the cursor. Center, top, bottom alignment, page up/down
Sticky View	`Z`	Same as View mode but persistent — stays active until you press `Esc`. Useful when reading/scrolling through a lot of text
Goto	`g`	Jump to various locations (e.g., `gg` = top of file, `ge` = end of file, `gd` = definition)
Match	`m`	Jump to matching brackets, select text objects (e.g., `mm` = matching bracket, `miw` = inner word, `ma(` = around parens)
Window	`Ctrl-w`	Split and manage windows (e.g., `Ctrl-w v` = vertical split, `Ctrl-w s` = horizontal split, `Ctrl-w w` = cycle windows)
Space	`Space`	Access higher-level commands: file picker (`Space f`), search (`Space /`), symbol picker (`Space s`), etc. This is the “leader” key
Command	`:`	Enter a command-line prompt (e.g., `:w` = write, `:q` = quit, `:wq` = write and quit)

Project Diablo 2

Steam Deck

Installation

Switch to Desktop Mode
Install & run Lutris
Search for “Project Diablo 2” in the list of installable games, and install it
- This will take care of all dependencies
- Select “yes” when asked to install a missing web component

You’ll be able to start PD2 from Lutris, in Desktop Mode. Make sure the game starts and runs.

Run the game from Steam

In Lutris, duplicate the newly added “Project Diablo 2” game
Rename it “Steam PD2”
Change its executable path to point to SteamPD2.exe instead of PD2Launcher.exe
Right click on “Steam PD2” and add to Steam

IMPORTANT

As of 2025-08-13, the default runner (“Wine Version”) used by Lutris is wine-ge-8-26-x86_64.
If you can’t start PD2 after an update:

Change the runner to anything else, try to start the game, then change it back to wine-ge-8-26-x86_64, and start the game again.

(Optionally) remove and re-add the Steam shortcut to SteamPD2.exe

Reboot your Deck, for good measure

This should force a reset/clearing of some settings, and your game should run again correctly.

Saves location

On the Steam Deck, if PD2 is installed through Lutris, the default path is /home/deck/Games/project-diablo-2/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Diablo II/Save

Linux Mint

Installation

Same steps as for the Steam Deck

Run the game from Steam

Directly add the full path to SteamPD2.exe as a non-Steam game
Set compatibility to Proton 9.0-4

Smoother framerate

Download and unzip this inside the Project Diablo 2 directory (drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Diablo II/ProjectD2).

Edit d2gl.json and set "other"."load_dlls_early" to "d2fps.dll:stdcall:_Init@0"

Incompatible with online play

As of 2026-08-07, this .dll is not authorized by PD2 servers and will prevent you from playing online

Proton Debugging

Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% into the launch options of a specific game. It will create a steam-<gameid>.log into your home folder.
If a game crashes at startup
- check the permissions of SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/<gamename>
- delete SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/<gameid>

Steam Deck

Broken settings

By default, the performances are awful, the framerate is capped to 30fps, and changing the graphics settings will break the image ratio and render the controller unresponsive

Add -windowed to the launch parameters to fix the graphics settings.
The framerate re-locks itself to 30 each time you launch the game. Change it and save to unlock it.

Frame Generation

Decky framegen won’t work correctly, but will fix the aforementioned issues.
Decky LSFG is severely buggy, will show artifacts and mess with controls. Do not utse.

In a world where technology becomes more utterly fucked every day, userscripts can feel liberating. You don’t know what are userscripts? They’re tiny (or not) javascript scripts that you can inject into any web page. Kinda like a browser plugin, but usually hyper-focused to change specific behaviors or visuals on specific sites.

They’re a great way to take back a bit of control.

You can use them by installing a userscripts manager like Tampermonkey (it’s the one I use).

Now what about a few examples?

Reddit is a mess (to put it gently), you know your health would be better if you stopped interacting with it, but it’s still a useful resource. Rejoice, here’s a script for old.reddit.com to disable the reply button and that useless notification icon!

itch.io

You like to browse itch.io for quirky games, assets, or inspiration, but you can’t stand the neverending horror and visual novel slops when you’re browsing the site? This script will automatically filter out the horror tag, and dynamically remove visual novels as you scroll down.

Hackernews

The “orange hell site” is terrible and I don’t visit often it anymore, but I like this snippet: it adds icons to quickly see the links with the most votes or comments.

Color #32

The default dark grey color at index 32 (0x202020) isn’t actually part of the palette. It’s used in the PIcotron GUI (e.g. as the background in the sprites editor), but renders as black when used in sprites. If you overwrite this color for your app, it will also change it in the GUI.

Multiple Steam Users

The thread contains more information and links, but this is the method I initially used.

The following guide shows how you can configure steam games installation folder for it to be shared between multiple Linux users.

In the guide I’m using /steam-library/ directory to store games, but you can can choose a different folder. Just make sure required users can get into this folder.

It’s been tested on Ubuntu 20.04, but must be applicable to other Linux distros as well.
I’ve created this guide a few days after the configuration, so I might have missed something. Feel free to share your feedback and\or Linux wisdom - I don’t have much anyway.

Disclaimer: your are applying this configuration at your own risk. But it didn’t break my PC and I don’t see how it could break yours.

Initial folder configuration (your account needs to have sudo root permissions)

Run the following in the shell:

sudo chgrp gamers /steam-library/
sudo chmod 770 /steam-library/
sudo chmod g+s /steam-library/

Steam configuration (must be done for every Linux user who needs access to the library)

Go to Steam - Settings - Downloads - STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS

Add /steam-library/ folder there by pressing ’+’ icon and selecting the required directory. Highlight newly added entry and set is as default by pressing ’…’ icon and choosing corresponding option.

If games already downloaded to the shared folder

First of all, shut down Steam on all accounts.
Apply initial config (if has not yet been done).
Run the following:
